This past weekend marked a milestone for Pickleball Power Play as we hosted our inaugural event in the West Texas region at the prestigious Falls Athletic Club in Lubbock, Texas. The event was a resounding success, drawing over 200 participants eager to showcase their skills in this fast-growing sport.
The excitement began on Friday evening with "Pickleball 101," where 24 newcomers learned the fundamentals of pickleball under the guidance of certified pros Jeff Contreras and Daniel Quinones, along with Jay Harrell, the local Pickleball Professional at The Falls. Participants enjoyed a round-robin tournament from 5 PM to 9 PM, setting the stage for a weekend filled with competitive spirit and camaraderie.
Over the weekend, more than 15 diverse divisions were contested, ranging from men's and women's doubles to singles, including a competitive 50+ category. Players came from all corners of Texas, including Austin, Waco, San Angelo, Brownwood, Plano, Ft Worth, Amarillo, Odessa, Midland, and even as far away as El Paso. We also welcomed players from neighboring New Mexico, with participants from Las Cruces, Hobbs, Ruidoso, and Portales joining the fray.
Pickleball Power Play events are designed to offer continuous action with minimal downtime, thanks to our round-robin format. This ensures that each player is tested to their fullest, both in skill and endurance, while fostering a tight-knit community atmosphere.
The competition heated up on Saturday with men's and women's doubles, while Sunday featured mixed doubles followed by a demanding singles division. The challenges of the singles matches proved the endurance and skill of our participants, making for an exciting conclusion to the tournament.
As the event concluded, players were awarded medals for their outstanding performances, celebrating their dedication and hard work. For full details and results from the tournament, please visit the Players Forum on our website.
A special thank you goes to Mia Benson, General Manager of The Falls Athletic Club, and Jay Harrell, Head Pickleball Professional, for their incredible support and hospitality. Additional heartfelt thanks are extended to Dave Foster, Dave Treat, Jalie Harrell, Lori Williams, Dana Kerr, Julie Lowe, and Lisa Powell, whose efforts were pivotal in making this event a standout success.
We are also grateful to Food King in Lubbock for donating water to keep all our players hydrated throughout the event, and to Mark Denesha from Forever Forward Physical Therapy, who provided much-needed stretching sessions for our players, enhancing their performance and well-being.
To everyone who participated and supported our first event in Lubbock, your enthusiasm and sportsmanship truly made this tournament special. We look forward to building on this success and returning to Lubbock for more pickleball action.
